The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Sunnie Voorhees can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for Sunnie Voorhees

Sunnie Voorhees
On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, God sent His angels to carry Mrs. Sunnie Alberta Cheeks Voorhees to His heavenly home. After a short period of declining health, pain and suffering, loved ones now know her trials and tribulations will be no more.

Mrs. Sunnie was born in Taylors, South Carolina, on February 14, 1932, to the late George Albert and Luezar Washington Cheeks. She attended Taylors Rosenwald School.

At an early age, she joined St. Matthew United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful and dedicated member. She served her church in many capacities including Wesleyan Service Guild, Youth Coordinator/Advisor, member of the Adult Choir and Hospitality Committee. She was always available and eager to assist others and give advice wherever and whenever needed. Her heart and home were always open to anyone who needed shelter, food or a motherly figure.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Edward Voorhees; one daughter, Angela Voorhees Bowman and two sons, Gregory Alan Voorhees and John Edward Voorhees, Jr.

Left to cherish many fond memories are her daughters, Yvonne Voorhees Goodwin of Travelers Rest, SC, Donna V. (Franklin) Robinson of Greenville, SC and Martha Owens-Platt of Bowman, SC; sons, Travis Scott (Abby) Voorhees of Greer, SC and Robert Wilson Voorhees of Greenville, SC; one daughter-in-law, Odessa B. Voorhees; one son-in-law, Anthony Bowman; twenty-one grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A special thank you to her caregiver, Ms. Rebecca “Shirley” Simmons.
